Fall 2025, (Visual) Principles for Screen

Oct 13, 15 — Two directions...

This week, we are looking at everyone's first two design directions for their website.

We will also look at everyone's maps from those people who didn't show last week.

For Wednesday's class, select one essay-length part of your book for next class. Clean it up if you need to (that is, it should be free of typos and easy to copy and paste) to be ready to use on Wednesday.

For next week:

  • Continue designing your website. To do this, first develop a wireframe for your site. Second, based on in-class feedback this week, make another draft of your website design. Focus on details you didn’t during the first round (navigation, typography, etc.). Bring in multiple versions/iterations of each page to test out different possibilities. Make sure to also show at least one or two mobile versions, so you can begin thinking about how this will adapt to smaller screen sizes. Next week, share these 1) wireframes and 2) multiple iterations of each page of your website, including mobile. For references on wireframes, see the Figma Examples in the "Wireframes" page. Essentially, wireframes are the more systematic part, whereas your website sketches will bring it all together visually and with real content.

  • Also, have ready eight of your latest Visual Texts uploaded to your Are.na Channel. You should have more new ones by now, but select eight you'd like to share.
  • Lastly, we thought it might be nice to stay organized in Figma, if you're using it. We started a Figma Organization for our class that we'd like you to join. Please create a copy of the example project and label it with your name. You can then paste your work in here, or add links to web prototypes from here too. We'll continue to use Are.na as well. Figma allows us to comment on specific aspects of your designs, while Are.na (Yourname's Book to Website) is for sharing the essential process updates each week.
